We can similarly argue if consciousness in humans has its properties based on something like real (meta)physical property in Nature or just an illusion created by our brains. Thus we can speak of two viewings of (human) consciousness:
Strong Consciousness – consciousness that is a real (meta)physical property, probably a kind of special physical field or energy, responsible for driving living organisms in general and having more than isolated manifestation in individual organisms but rather a property of the universe in its wholeness
vs.
Weak Consciousness – consciousness that is generated by the mere complexity of our brains and that is nothing more but an illusion to ourselves and the observers due to which we perceive ourselves as self-aware and free-acting entities.
This is an age-old debate of Materialism vs Dualism and interestingly science nowadays has no firm answer yet what consciousness is and can we recreate it artificially.
Many scientists remain firm skeptics with going further than their materialistic positions on the Universe and yet I personally am convinced that simply materialistic approach cannot encompass all the known to us phenomena starting with ESPs and going though what psychologist like Jung have discovered about the human psyche.
Nowadays Quantum Physics has managed to prove that the strange phenomena on quantum level do also apply to the macro level and therefore the microcosm and macrocosm are inextricably related
As Depeche Mode sing in their song Macrovision:
See the microcosm
In macrovision
Our bodies moving
With pure precision
One universal
Celebration
One evolution
One creation
